Osip Mandelstam: Articles and Essays – A Collection for the Thinking Fan
This collection brings together the publicistic and literary-critical works of one of the 20th century’s most significant poets, Osip Mandelstam (1891–1938). In these articles and essays, Mandelstam explores the nature of poetic language, the forms of culture, and the spiritual foundations that underpin them, as well as the interplay between tradition and modernity.
Refusing to align with any single aesthetic movement of his time, Mandelstam rejected the mystical-theosophical views of the Symbolists, avoided the cultural nihilism of Proletkult and the oversimplifications of the RAPP, and distanced himself equally from the formalist school and vulgar sociologism. Instead, he championed a holistic, all-encompassing vision of art, one that ties creativity inextricably to historical existence. His critical judgments, like his poetry, remain open to the present and the past, embracing the rich, capricious life of world culture.
The volume includes his authorial collections On Poetry (1928) and Conversation about Dante (1933), as well as selected individual articles and essays.
