Sergei Venediktovich Fomichev – Lectures on Field Theory
This volume presents an extended course of lectures on relativity and classical electrodynamics, delivered by the author to applied-science students at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT). The material is divided into three parts.
Part one covers special relativity and the equations of motion for charged particles in an external electromagnetic field. Part two addresses the equations of the electromagnetic field in vacuum, their consequences, and the emission and scattering of electromagnetic waves. Part three introduces the basic concepts of macroscopic electrodynamics, including Vavilov–Cherenkov radiation. Six appendices provide the mathematical apparatus of three-dimensional tensors, special cases of charged-particle motion in electromagnetic fields, expansion of the free field into oscillators, and the Lorentz–Dirac equation with the radiation reaction force.
A key feature of the book is the detailed mathematical derivation given for every topic discussed. Designed for students, postgraduates, and researchers in physics and mathematics.
