Eugene M. Vereshchagin – Creative Intentions of A.S. Pushkin Left in Drafts: Accessible Textual Essays
This scholarly work delves into the dynamic evolution of seven plot-related and three non-plot-related creative intentions of Alexander Pushkin, as preserved in the drafts of Eugene Onegin and The Bronze Horseman. The author examines how Pushkin’s initial plans often shifted over time, with not all turns in his intentions previously identified. Through meticulous deciphering of the poet’s challenging manuscripts—read differently from predecessors—the book presents the results of detailed analysis and reinterpretation of key fragments from these two major works. Each studied shift in plot and character portrayal diverges from traditional interpretations. A separate, eighth essay focuses on a speech-behavioral analysis of The Stationmaster, exploring Pushkin’s religiosity and his reimagining of the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The author does not promise easy reading but aims to present conclusions accessibly. Recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
