A unique literary artifact for fans of avant-garde Russian prose. This is Boris Vladimirovich Ostanin’s dictionary of explanations and commentary for Sasha Sokolov’s novel Between Dog and Wolf.
The concept for this glossary first emerged in 1982, when Ostanin wrote several draft entries, before the project was set aside for decades. In 2019, some 37 years later, the original manuscripts were rediscovered. Boleslav Martynov prepared them for publication, with additional corrections and contributions from Sasha Sokolov himself, as well as Sergei Zavyalov and Viktor Lapitsky.
Appendices include a substantial letter from Sasha Sokolov to Boris Ostanin—the author’s own commentary on the commentator’s commentary—along with a schematic diagram of the novel’s structure. Also featured are fragments from Ostanin’s book 37 and 1 (2017), excerpts from his correspondence with Alexander Kobak (1984–83), and his letters exchanged with Sasha Sokolov in 2018.
A rigorously researched companion volume that illuminates one of the most complex and linguistically inventive works of modern Russian literature.
