This two-volume set presents the selected works of Boris Lvovich Riftin (1932–2012), a distinguished Russian academician and sinologist. The second volume focuses on his fundamental 1970 study, Historical Epic and Folklore Tradition in China (Oral and Book Versions of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms). This is supplemented by a previously unpublished Russian-language work, Legends of Guan Yu and His Cult, featuring texts recorded by Riftin during his fieldwork in China in the 1990s.
Through an analysis of the famous 14th-century epic by Luo Guanzhong and oral narratives of the Three Kingdoms period (3rd century AD), Riftin reveals the complex interplay between written literature and folklore. He emphasizes the influence of folk tradition on classical book monuments, both in medieval times and later periods. This volume is a reprint of the 2022 edition published by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
