Arseny Vladimirovich Skvortsov – Linguistic Analysis of Chinese Texts from Various Periods, Volume 12: Application of Immediate Constituent Analysis and Functional Sentence Perspective in the Process of Translation from Chinese to Russian
This monograph offers a rigorous, formalized approach to translating Chinese sentences into Russian, focusing on immediate constituent analysis and functional sentence perspective. The methodology proceeds from small to large structures, building sentence trees to maximize translation precision. It is systematically applied across three distinct linguistic domains: first, to ancient pre-Qin Chinese sentences from classics such as Lunyu, Mengzi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xunzi, and Yanzi Chunqiu; second, to analyze parallelism and translate Tang dynasty poems by Du Fu and Bai Juyi; and third, to contemporary Chinese sentences sourced from the 2014 Renmin Ribao yearbook.
The second part applies functional sentence perspective to semantically analyze and translate selected tales from Pu Songling’s Liaozhai Zhiyi. By mapping supra-phrasal units onto specific theme-rheme progressions, the author reconstructs omitted themes without resorting to intermediate translation into modern Chinese.
This work is an expanded, corrected, and supplemented edition of the author’s doctoral dissertation, successfully defended at Nankai University (Tianjin, PRC) on May 22, 2021.
